1. Gold markings - Reputable jewellers will carry gold products bearing various marks that indicate their karat value. A piece of pure gold or jewelry will bear the 24K marking while those that contain less gold percentage will bear lower karat values. Items containing the ?GP? marking may mean that it is merely coated or plated with gold, and is not actually made from pure gold.
2. Percentage of sheen - Did you know that real gold is not very shiny at all? Do not be fooled into thinking that all gold has an immaculate sheen to it. If a piece of gold jewelry looks too perfectly shiny to you, it pays to investigate the nature of this item more closely. 3. Rust - Over time, fake gold or metals mixed with gold will rust.

4. Reaction to acid - If you have doubts as to whether a piece of gold is real or not, you can perform a simple acid test to see if it reacts to hydrochloric acid. Actual gold will not be affected so you can safely conclude that this is a piece of real gold not mixed with other metals.
